Isn't it enough to just be a good person?

What counts as a 'good' person?

Every person has a different definition of what is moral.

"I mean, a good person is what most people in society would think - don't steal, don't murder, don't harm your neighbour—those kinds of things."

Even then, people still disagree. Some think it is okay to tell 'white lies', while others think it is wrong to tell any lie. Some people consider pre-marital sex wrong, while others consider it morally acceptable as long as it is between consenting adults.

Humans cannot decide what is moral or not, as if we do, it becomes a matter of personal preference than objective truth.

Proverbs 14:12
"There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death."

While it is true the Bible plainly teaches that God wants us to refrain from immoral activities, good morality can never pay for our sins.

Romans 3:23
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

According to the Bible, the payment for sin is death, but God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son, Jesus, who sacrificed Himself to pay for our sins, so we may have eternal life in heaven.

Romans 6:23
"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Peter 2:24
"Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed."

Not every 'good, moral person' will go to heaven. Only those who are saved will go to heaven. According to the Bible, in order to be saved, one must:

  1. Hear the gospel of God’s gift of salvation to all mankind (Mark 16:15)

  2. Believe Jesus is the son of God who died for us (John 3:16)

  3. Repent of every sin (Acts 3:19)

  4. Confess faith in Jesus (Romans 10:9)

  5. Be baptised for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38)

  6. Stay faithful (2 Timothy 4:7-8)
